Goodbye Fungal ToeNails

THE BEST TREATMENT IS ALWAYS PREVENTION Therefore, a complete treatment program always has to start with prevention.

Do I have to fungus?

How do my toes look? When we have those discolored, thick, powdery, “ooochy” toenails, that we call fungal nails, it makes us feel bad about our appearance; and admit it or not our self-esteem.

ABMSP Podiatrist
Dr. Kenneth Rehm Urges “November to Remember” Foot Inspections

November is the right time to re-double vigilant inspection of the skin of the feet, said Kenneth B. Rehm, DPM, Diplomate of the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP). Colder temperatures and lower humidity can lead to dry, cracked, and peeling skin. What’s more, autumn and winter bring boots, heavy shoes, and socks—meaning patients have a tendency to stop paying active attention to their feet....

Preventing Diabetic Foot Disease

With doctors’ treatments often at the whims of their controllers, holistic prevention is more important than ever.

Ask any health care provider. The practice of medicine, and, indeed, the role of the doctor, has been transformed significantly. Time was, a patient would come in to the office and the doctor could take all the time required, order the tests needed and make the necessary referrals such that an optimum diagnosis and treatment plan could be formulated.

The Diabetic Foot - Taking a Stand on Falls in the Person with Diabetes—Part 1

Having a suitable fall prevention strategy will optimize the quality of life for your diabetic patient.

We are all aware of it. The New York Times even warns us to brace for the upsurge of falls expectedly arising from an aging nation (Nov. 2, 2014). As our population matures and people live longer, the number of senior citizens who experience falls is soaring. According to an epidemiologic study headed up by Dr. Christine Cigolle, the 2-year prevalence of self-reported falls among all adults 65 years or older increased from 28.2% in 1998 to 36.3% in 2010. Stratifying by age, fall prevalence ...

ABMSP Podiatrists Urge November to Remember Foot Inspections

November is the right time to re-double vigilant inspection of the skin of the feet, said Kenneth B. Rehm, D.P.M., Diplomate of the ABMSP. Colder temperatures and lower humidity can lead to dry, cracked, and peeling skin. What’s more, autumn and winter bring boots, heavy shoes, and socks—meaning patients have a tendency to stop paying active attention to their feet. “Out of sight, out of mind,” said Rehm. “But the ‘November to Remember’ push aims to get more patients to see their ABMSP board -certified podiatrists and to examine their own feet on a regular basis. ABMSP podiatrists are asking patients to sit down in November and make a commitment to themselves to look closely at the skin of their feet, which may be telling them quite a bit of information about the status of their diabetes symptoms.”

The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP)

New York, NY (April 27, 2016) – The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that currently 29.1 million people—or 9.3% of the population—have diabetes. Many of these people deal with serious problems in their feet as a result of the nerve and circulation issues caused by diabetes. Worse—they may be at risk for eventual amputation if their foot issues are not treated properly. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) recommends that patients living with diabetes seek professional treatment with a board-certified podiatrist to help them both improve their quality of life and reduce the threat of ongoing foot problems or potential amputations.

Bringing Podiatry Into the Future: The American College of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry

The changes that have taken place in podiatric medicine and surgery are immense and impressive. In addition, the whole field of healthcare has made drastic changes as well. Everything in life—and especially in the professions where the most personal issues and welfare of the people served are at stake—must reconcile itself constantly with these changes in order to best serve the public.

The field of podiatric medicine and surgery is no exception to this tenet. In fact, podiatric physicians have a heavier burden than most to bear, given the intrinsic challenges that have always been part of the profession— specifically, having to thrive and survive, and having to deal with all the rifts and fissures created within, all while managing the changes in the healthcare system. Nevertheless, podiatric medicine and surgery remains one of the greatest medical fields ever.

Birth of The Barefoot Kids Foundation on Oprah

When television superstar Oprah Winfrey gave 300 members of her audience $1,000 last October, all were reportedly inspired to do good deeds with the money. One woman was said to have given a dozen homeless men spa treatments and new clothes. Another gave a helping hand to a man with a brain tumor and nine children.

But Winfrey's message of "paying it forward" extended beyond her TV show, for it also inspired Carlsbad residents Loretta and Dan Ross to start their own nonprofit organization, the Barefoot Kids Foundation.
"It was inspiring to see what they did with it," said Loretta Ross, who with her husband started the foundation in July. "I'd always wanted to do something like this, and this seemed like the right time in my life to do it."
